Raging Nerdgasm presents our top 9 favorite figures of all time

Tom Khayos and Raging Nerdgasm present our top 9 favorite action figures of all time. Why top 9? Because we like to do one less than the competition (I’m lazy and besides I consider the 10th spot what everyone else adds in the comments).

Number 9

MMPR Green Ranger

MMPR came out when I was about 12 and had a massive impact on me. I was old enough to be involved in a real toy craze. My mother and I hunted before and after school and on the weekends for new MMPR toys I didn’t have. I focused on the larger 8 inch Rangers and Evil Space Aliens but eventually fell into the 5 inch line as well. Then came the zords and low and behold, if you wanted Tommy the Green Ranger, you had to buy the DragonZord. Now this was double jeopardy for me, a figure I needed for my Ranger team and he shared my first name.

The Green Ranger was really no different than the other five I bought already in those awesome triangular boxes, just the different helmet and the real kicker; the golden chest plate. Those first few episodes where Tommy debuted you knew he meant serious business, no one walks into a scene wearing golden shoulder and chest armor and expect to blend into the background. He was a serious bad ass and had one objective, destroy the Rangers. The DragonZord was an awesome piece to bring home and crack open right away. By the time I got one, Tommy was already a good guy and sort of the leader of the MMPR but he was still kicking the Ranger’s asses in my world.

I loved the color combination of green and gold. Like Pimp Don “Magic” Juan says, “Green is for the moneys and gold is for the honeys.”

Number 8

Slush Head (Kalimarr)

This was a hard decision, I’ve always really liked Slush Head. Not that he isn’t my favorite figure from the line but I recently got my own Sagitar figure and have to say if I had him during my adolescence, he’d be the figure I’m talking about now. I was always a bigger fan of the New Adventures of He-Man. Swords and sorcery were never my thing, space mutants and technology always had my attention. Granted, both cartoons were pretty bad even though many of you still hold them in highest regards but I always dug the New Adventures more than Masters of the Universe.

Slush Head had that different look; a big fishbowl on his head full of an unknown liquid a little thicker than basic water, two silver robotic tentacles, great scaly textures along his exposed arms and legs and some really fantastic dark turquoise armor. Slush Head had really good articulation for his time and the helmet was “sealed” so none of the viscous fluid could escape. The New Adventures line was full of some really inventive characters especially coming hot off the heels of the original series that made He-Man into the multi million dollar franchise it is today. The integration of technology and mutants made for some really well detailed figures. Were they as detailed as the cartoon that inspired them? Nope, but they made a decent attempt to get the likenesses close enough to pass the inspection of your average 6-10 year old in the late 80’s. But, He-Man figures weren’t known for being show accurate.

Slush Head was always a stand out figure and in my opinion got high marks for both detail and play value.

Number 7

Gripptogg from Power Lords

Even as a kid growing up in the 80s, I wasn’t aware of Revell making anything other than model kits. The series was full of some of the most bizarre aliens and monsters I had seen my whole life and I didn’t really discover the series till it was long gone from store shelves. I would have loved to have seen something other than the usual Masters of the Universe and other kind of boring fantasy lines on the shelves as a kid. I’m guessing they really didn’t get enough of a push by the stores or even their production company themselves. I did one day at the flea market come across one of the most peculiar 6 inch figures I had really ever seen.

Being the early 90s, there was no such thing as an internet database to research toys, so I had to rely on the talents of those with more experience than myself. Finding out the figure’s name was Gripptogg was cool, I just called him four arms. Learning about Power Lords made me want more of them and I accumulated a few over the years. Now only lacking 3 single figures and the Volcan Rock play set, I feel very accomplished due to the fact the figures don’t show up often. All these accomplishments aside, Gripptogg holds a special place as the first figure that launched me head first into learning about a seldom mentioned line.

My Gripptogg’s seams were never sealed shut so my figure had the annoying habit of falling apart. He’s since been glued together.

Number 6

Hot Head from TMNT

TMNT was the first toy series I actively pursued. I was a casual collector my whole life and still now I buy what I come across and can’t say I hunt down things specifically but TMNT was the exception to all that. Every month there was new mutants, both good and bad, to add to the collection as well as different representations of the four turtles. I hunted down every new mutant I could find and spent my allowance and chore money I did. I’d even go into debt with my parents, bartering future chores for a TMNT figure so I didn’t have to leave it behind. With focus like that, I got figures people search for today like Hot Spot, Scratch and Dino Shredder.

Every TMNT figure I own I don’t think I could part with but there’s a select few that I’ve bought duplicates of and Hot Head is one of them. How can you go wrong with a red dragon humanoid with an extending neck? Now picking Hot Head out of the few hundred figures they’ve made wasn’t easy. I really liked Mutagen Man, Baxter Stockman, Wingnut and Screwloose, Muckman, General Tragg and Triceratron. Hell, I have a Super Shredder on the card with Kevin Nash’s autograph but I’d have to save him for a collection of my favorite possessions with cool stories. Hot Head was just inventive, everything attached to the TMNT line had something to do with an actual animal hybrid. Outside of Mer Dude, he may be one of a short list of fantasy creatures added to the ranks of TMNT.

I wasn’t even aware of Hot Head’s extending neck until like a year after I bought him. I was pulling him out of a box by the head and it surprised me. Very coy Playmates, very coy indeed.

Number 5

Joker from Mego’s World’s Greatest Super Heroes

I’ve always been a big fan of the Joker. The comics made him Batman’s most unrelenting arch nemesis and the 1989 movie really made him the most over the top villain who wasn’t suffering from insanity, he was enjoying every minute of it. Jack’s performance of the Joker really cemented my love for the character and I sought out all the toy representations I could afford. I stumbled into Cesar Romero’s performance too and found it just as compelling as Nicholson’s but more campy and fun and blood and bullets and laughing gas.

Mego was another one of those great lines I didn’t have the luxury of growing up with. I was too late to even experience the death and clearance of Mego. I got bits and pieces of Mego dolls over my whole life collecting. Every so often I’d luck out and get a doll right at complete but I’d end up selling it or trading it. I wasn’t much for the Planet of the Apes line and the only complete Marvel one I owned was Spiderman and everyone owned Spiderman. One day toy hunting I ended up in an antiques mall and got lucky by stumbling into a Mego Joker. Dead mint like he just got taken out of the box and just $35, a very fair price.

Number 4

King Kong Bundy from WWF LJN

King Kong Bundy wasn’t just one of my first LJN WWF figures, he was my first concealed blunt weapon. The figure had to be not only the biggest of the WWF line but also the heaviest. The whole LJN line was durable, sure the paint might smudge but unless you dragged them behind a vehicle or let a dog get at them, they’re probably still around today. With him I broke a window and knocked out a cousin in a heated argument. He was the only LJN WWF figure I owned during my childhood, I think the only reason I bought him in the first place was I’d never had a toy that heavy before and it intrigued me.

I can’t even tell you much about King Kong Bundy’s career unless I wiki’d it, to me he was just an iconic wrestler in a black singlet. I was always more of a Hogan or Macho Man fan but I didn’t own one of those till I was nearly an adult.

Number 3

Hacker from Centurions

This one was really hard because how can you have Hacker without Doc Terror? I’m brave enough to split up this dynamic duo of evil and confess my love for one over the other. Hacker had a cooler name, both in a sense of being related to computers and chopping people to bits. I like the color blue and he’s right at 90% blue. I prefer his helmet design over Doc Terror’s and his selection of weapons even though they are interchangeable. And, I like the fact that under the helmet Hacker looks like Sloth from the Goonies.

Unlike Doc Terror, Hacker’s chest is full exposed. Either he’s got something to show off or he’s the bravest person on a battlefield where lasers are flying and crap is blowing up all around him. Hacker’s helmet had horns, enough said. Finally, Hacker’s cyborg half is called Legion and we all know Legion doesn’t forgive and Legion doesn’t forget. All around a cool and underrated figure.

It wasn’t till recently I got my very own Hacker figure. I find myself at my desk with him more often than Doc Terror, subliminally he’s my favorite among the two of them.

Number 2

Kenner’s 16 inch Alien

The first action figure I owned, no joke. My mom bought it for me at a yard sale and I couldn’t have been more than 6 months old. I’d drag it and my teddy bear everywhere with me, the cutest and strangest thing you’ve ever seen. With all the controversy made over this toy I wish the people who pushed to get it pulled from store shelves could have seen me playing with mine like it was my best friend in the world. With the failure of the large Alien, Kenner scrapped all intentions they had for making a 3 ¾ inch line of figures which while I had no idea at 6 months old still made me wonder what could have been. It wouldn’t be till the 90s when we’d see the Alien franchise rear it’s head again in action figure form.

While the 90s Kenner line was mostly laughable with Alien hybrids of everything from crabs to rhinos the large figure based off the 1979 movie was all business and no fluff. It was so scary and based off of one of the most twisted sci-fi movies of it’s time, parents and activists made it their job to have it pulled from respectable toy store shelves. I have older toy collector friends who recall seeing them after the recall at discount retailers stacked chest high for ⅓ the original price and eventually disappearing due to a huge interest in overseas buyers from Japan. Most unique thing about him was the action feature of the striking 2nd jaw and his sheer size made him a cool toy to play with.

Even when I went through periods of not having many toys displayed in my living space, the 1979 Alien was always out and made for a really chilled conversation piece that could turn even the most anti-nerd into a big kid.

Number 1

Callisto from Major Matt Mason

I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, well displaced from the toy heaven I always looked back at fondly of the 60’s and 70’s. I’m not saying the era I grew up in didn’t have great toys (TMNT really molded me into a savvy shopper, going for the best of what the line had to offer.) I’m just saying I would have really dug being able to buy Star Wars figures with my allowance or getting Micronauts for Christmas. One of the great lines I really wish I had more of was Major Matt Mason. Major Matt Mason was an awesome series of rubber, bendable astronauts and a couple of aliens along with their space equipment which made for some really awesome display shots in magazines and personal collections.

I got my first taste of Major Matt Mason (and after typing that I feel like I shouldn’t have but I’m going to roll with it, Raging Nerdgasm keeps it raw) at a flea market junk bin. Now to get one of the main astronauts would have been really cool but I got Callisto, friend of the Matt Mason crew. He had no accesories and his paint was peeling off but all of the wires inside the figure were intact. What a find and only fifty cents back in the late 80s! Granted, I knew more about what it was than the dealer I bought it from but I didn’t care, I had a piece of one of my holy grails of toy collecting. Callisto stayed by my side most of my life till I misplaced him during a move 3 years ago. Luckily I found him again in a sock drawer, apparently I protected him so well even I had no clue where he was. I’ve also added Matt Mason himself to my collection in the last 2 years, scored for a meager $15 bucks. I may never get the opportunity to add more of this line to my collection but I’ll always be proud of the two pieces I have in my possession.

I always like Callisto because he was cooler than your average bendy and the translucent green head always reminded me of apple flavored Jolly Ranchers.

Your weekly Nerdgasm 03/25/13

(A logo you can trust. You have no idea how hard it is to get Optimus Prime and Skeletor in the same room.)

Your weekly Nerdgasm!

Capcom gave me reason to love modern games again

(oh yeah, this is the good stuff right here.)

I got two words for you; Ducktales, woohoo! Seriously, Capcom this week broke the news that they were making a revamp of their ever so popular NES Ducktales video game. Not only did they have the news, but the trailer was ready, showcasing the game play and graphics. Backgrounds are 3D rendered with all game sprites maintaining a very cool "hand drawn" effect. Capcom says the game will be very similar to it's predecessor, with a main room complete with stage select options and new playable levels such as the McDuck Money Bin.

(I'd play this level for hours just because I loved the music)

The trailer showed the Money Bin level as well as the Amazon and Transylvania, but didn't show fan favorite levels the Himalayas or the ever popular outer space level. The outer space level was everyone's favorite level and the music from that level is in just about everyone's top 5 NES game soundtracks, outside of Metroid, Legend of Zelda or SMB. What's the deal Capcom, don't play with our hearts like this. Anyways, the fanboys and fangirls squealed with anticipation after watching the trailer, even getting to learn many developers and coders for current games hold Ducktales in highest regards (the original game ran on the MegaMan engine for crying out loud and your cane was both pogo stick and golf club!). The game will be available on PSN, XBOXLIVE and WII-U networks for download, costing $15. Which is a real deal considering any of us who owned an original one most likely paid $50 or so back in the 90's. But please Capcom, don't forget your loving fans on STEAM (such as myself).

I guess Teenage Alien Ninja Turtles is still a go

(credit to toysrevil.net for the picture)

Much to everyone's dismay, TANT (which is dangerously close to TAINT) is still in pre-production with Michael Bay gunning to ruin everything from your childhood with confirmed Megan Fox as April O'Neil .I wonder if him and the Dwayne Johnson have a running bet to see how many awesome properties they can trash? I wonder if April will be a stripper instead of a news woman? I wonder if the fanbase will allow this movie to happen?

(the face of evil!)

Anyways, the first actor to join the cast as one of the four turtles/aliens/brothers is Alan Ritchson (Aquaman on Smallville), allegedly taking the role of Raphael. That....that's actually OK with me. But when you say actor they mean voice actor, right? WRONG! The turtles/aliens/brothers not be animatronic suits but motion capture ala' Avatar styling. This.....this I'm cool with too because the actors will have to emote and actually act instead to trying to match up voice tone and infliction to puppeteers in suits. So TANT brings me through emotional ups and downs and not even one second of film has been shot. I'm holding out till I see who the villains are going to be since they are keeping really hush about it.

(was this ever confirmed legit or not?)

Boldly going......to mess my pants

Between trailers for Iron Man 3, Star Trek: Into Darkness and pictures from Pacific Rim, I can't contain the awesome. Seriously, it's going to be a great summer season at the movies. Not to cheap out on you in the third article, I just feel all three of these developing stories deserve their own blog entry this week so I'll leave you with the following.

Jurassic Park IV, Beetlejuice II and The Rock Says he wants to be in Star Wars Ep. VII

Pack a snack, we're going back to the park-

Just after the first of the year, Universal Studios released a statement that indeed Jurassic Park IV was once again a go. There's been at least 3 false starts to the ever looming 4th part to the saga, even Spielberg himself wanted to end the movies on a better note than we were left with in Jurassic Park III (which had plot holes big enough to swallow a T-Rex whole). Colin Trevorrow has been selected as director while script writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, of Rise of the Planet of the Apes fame, have already finished the script. With bearded McBillions himself Steven Spielberg as executive producer the movie has been slated for a mid June release next year.

It still leaves a lot of question brewing in fan's heads. Where will it take place? Who from the original cast will return for their "jump the shark" last hurrah? How deeply buried is that awful screenplay that involved human/dinosaur DNA mixing? And if all these questions have you itching to pull out your DVD or VHS of Jurassic Park, just wait till April 5th and you can see the film that spawned two really poorly planned sequels in theaters in 3D!

(what could have been......you hope.)

It's showtime! (again?)

Yes, the end of last week brought some exciting news to fans still holding on to the hope of a sequel to the 1988 paranormal comedy Beetlejuice. The picture below was posted on Seth Grahame-Smith's Twitter account to tease fans always asking about the fate of his script for the upcoming movie. With his past penning of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, I'm sure he's doing a fine job breathing life into the corpse of this over-hashed sequel. Two years ago when someone somewhere mentioned it; Geena Davis, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder all said they were game to reprise their roles in some capacity. Let's face it, those three haven't seen legit work in years and would probably do Frosted Flakes commercial cameo if you promised a warm meal and gas money. Keaton is supposed to have something to the effect of a supporting role in the RoboCop reboot but that has yet to be seen in more than production stills.

Now talks of a Beetlejuice sequel have been floating in the air since the movie made back it's initial investment five times over, spawned a toy line and a Saturday morning cartoon as well as catapulted Tim Burton to superstar director status. That led Burton into the director's chair of the first two Batman movies, Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas and Mars Attacks. While his work as of late hasn't charmed us like it used to, if they allowed the original idea for the impending sequel "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian", his body of work would have far less impressive and the world may have never gotten to know Johnny Depp which I'm not sure if that would have been a good thing or a bad thing. Anyways, Burton has expressed interest in directing another adventure into the hereafter. Beetlejuice is available on DVD and Bluray.

Skywalker, can you smell what the Rock is cookin'?

Yes, former WWF multiple time champion Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has expressed a serious interest in getting a role in the upcoming Disney/LucasFilms Star Wars Ep VII. Doesn't that sound like a bad idea? Well, not just the whole Rock wanting to be in the new Star Wars movie but the whole there's going to be new Star Wars movies in general. Doesn't it sound like a bad idea the more and more it's brought up? With the Star Wars saga rich with existing characters and all the new ones they'll be creating just for the next 3 films, not too many of them call for a giant, muscle-bound mountain of man meat. I mean, we all remember his breakout role in the Mummy 2 as the Scorpion King? Even the spin-off franchise only starred Dwayne Johnson for the first movie and moved on to some other professional fighter reprising the role for the second part. I'll be honest, I never watched the second film and only have fragmented memories of the first movie. All I remember is I was far from amused and even the action figures were lackluster and dull.

Anyways, the Rock won't be satisfied till he's ruined everything from your childhood. First GI Joe, then Star Wars.....what's next? He-Man? M.A.S.K? Power Rangers? My Little Pony?

On a side note, Dave Bautista of former WWF fame has been confirmed as Drax the Destroyer for the upcoming Disney/Marvel release Guardians of the Galaxy and I'm totally cool with that. Seriously, paint Dave Bautista green and there you go.....DONE!

The Forgotten Hero "Generator Rex"

To most people, Generator Rex is just another show that randomly played on Cartoon Network. But, to be honest, the show had a lot of promise when it came out.  The biggest flaw was that it was never on a constant time. They seem to keep changing the time or simply taking on and off the air.  The property is a part of Cartoon Network's portfolio of in house properties that also includes other popular titles such as Ben 10, Ben 10 Alien Force and Sym-Bionic Titan just to name a few.  It was mainly created as secondary action show for the kids that didn’t care for Ben 10, but to also attract a diversified (minority) market.  This is why Rex has a Mexican Hispanic background along with several other international friends.  Remember kids, the magic word in marketing for the past 15 years is “DIVERSITY”. LOL

Story:

The story takes place on your standard planet earth. But suddenly a few years back there was a horrible accident that spread small particle machines called “Nanites” into every living thing on earth.  To most living creatures the new particles stay dormant and don’t cause any harm, but for other it mutates them into creatures called Evos.  These Evos come in all shapes, sizes, and with different skills.  In the five years that the world have been living with this dilemma they created Providence;  an elite global group that deal with controlling, capturing and sometimes healing these Evos back to a manageable state. This is when Rex comes in.

Unlike other Evos who turn into crazy rampaging monster, Rex has the ability to control his Nanites into giant metallic mechanical elements that help him fight other Evos and at times help heal them.  His transformations include giant metal arms, giant metal feet, hovercraft wings attached to his back, a hover motorcycle, a giant sword from his arms and a hover train just to mention a few of his abilities.  His five major allies are a talking monkey called “Bobo HaHa”, “Noa” his best friend, “Dr. Holiday” his love interest but is too old for him, “Six” Super Agent/Modern Ninja that acts like his guardian and finally his brother “Cesar” who is more interested in his work than anything else that is happening in his surroundings.  As the show progress, you quickly learn what an amazing warrior Rex is but just like most modern heroes, he has some issues.  He’s currently 15 years old but sadly; he has no memory of who he was, where he’s been and about his family. This enhances the complexity of his identity as an teenager living in such a complicated world.

On top of all this craziness; Rex will also have to help and battle with some good, bad and undefined characters along the way. These include White Night, Providence, Black Night, Sertceis, Rex past gang in Japan (Tuck-- mummy guy, Squid-- green boy, Cricket-- girl on the team), and the major bad guys including Zag, BiWolf, Breach and VanClice. These sets of secondary and third line of characters really help put the story together and further more truly explain the connections with everything that has happened in Rex past and help him in his journey.

About Rex

Rex is the lead hero and he’s just your standard 15-16 year old teen who is simply trying to know who he is and learn the past that he had forgotten due to his Nanites transformations and evolution   He’s very stubborn and arrogant, but he does his best to never use his power for evil.  His passion is to just have fun, trying to connect with his Hispanic roots like eating tacos, watching Telenovelas on TV called “El Amor De La Pasion El Amor”, all while kicking butt and trying to cure the world of the Evos that can be saved for their family sake.

During his journey of discovering himself, he also gains new abilities and refines his power.  These power include Healing Evos, Big Sword, Slam Cannon, Flying Boogie, Slam Hands, Metal Feet.  Towards the end of season 1 , season 2 and 3  he develops even more powers including Rex Wip Evolution (s 1 ep 21), Double Battle Axe (s2 ep 6), Hoverboard (s2 ep19), Combination of Double Weapons (s3 ep2), and his Final Transformation wish is incredibly powerful and deadly.

About the Toys

Cartoon Network and Mattel joined in making the Generator Rex toy set around late 2010.  The series include 11 3 1/2 inch single figures set, 6 mid size sets with, and 3 large pieces.  Sad to say that I personally don’t not recall any ads for any of the toy lines on TV or online so this is probably part of the reason why the toy line didn't survive very long.  However you will find tons of online toy review on these toys so go nuts watching the videos.

3 ½  scale set

As far as I know there are 11 single figures in this set.  Some of the figures are literally the same figure but it will have some minor changes such as a head with sun glasses and others without sunglasses.  To add insult to injury, you will see on the package where it says with the glasses and without the glasses.  Some will be as simple as having same mold, same pose in the package but they changed the color or maybe once piece to make it look like its in a different environment.  This is a pretty great way for the company to make a lot variations fairly quick and keeping the price very moderate.  All in all the figures stay pretty true to the design of the show and keep the correct color scheme all the way through. They also come in a very cool bubble that has the gear theme shape accenting the gears in the logo’s design. I personally love it when companies go the extra mile for a great presentation.  It really makes me want to preserve the figure in its original state as best as possible.

As for the play.  They toys are your standard modern toy with pegs made from mainly plastic but amazingly enough is not very flimsy.  I will have to say however that getting to stand will be an amazing challenge unless you literally get some clear stands or glue them to a surface. The character is fairly lean with a large heavy weapon for arms. The only one you will get the stand are the figures with the big heavy feet.

5 ½ mid sets

The mid size sets are a little bigger in the sense that the packaging is bigger, the figures are bigger and some of them come with extra characters, vehicles and props. Three of the sets come with an alien and some slime in a small jar (nanite goo), the other 3 are vehicles such as the bike, the hover bike and flying hovering Rex.  To me these are the figures to really get for some play time if I was a kid.  The figures and the weapons are closer to scale with the original show design than the 3 ½ scale figures.  The vehicles are great and I can simply see myself as a kid running around a room with my Rex as a hoverbike.

Large figures

In this series I've seen only 3 different sets.  The Air Attack Boogie pack, The Slam Cannon, and the Transforming Rex Ride.  These three pieces are more interactive than the other sets. They are also bigger than the other sets and more interactive than the other pieces.

The Air attack boogie has a handle with a trigger that allows you the spin the propellers in Rex wings engine.  The Slam Cannon has a similar feature with the handle but it turns the toy into a dart gun and it allows you to remove the gun and play with the 6-7 inch figure of Rex.  Kind of like a Nerf gun type gun.  The toy also comes with a plastic stand that allows you to put him on a flat surface and just enjoy him.  The Transforming Rex Ride figure is literally the most entertaining figure out of the whole line. It comes with a Rex Figure, and his hoverbike ride that also transforms into a dart gun.  Now unlike the previous Slam Cannon, this transforming Slam Cannon is even bigger than the other Slam cannon.  Out of all the figures this is literally the one that is 95% close to actual size to the original design.  All in all very cool toy.

Series 2

In 2011 the series 2 Generator Rex were shown to the world at the Toy Fair. Sadly just like so many cool past toy lines, that’s as far as they went.  The toy line included figures the Bobo Haha, new bad guys, new good guys and some of Rexs' later transformations.  I was looking forward to the new bigger ax and larger sword version of Rex but that’s just me.

But anyway if you want to the check out what would have been series 2. Check out the blog below. They have amazing figures.

Don Bluth Game Trilogy

About Don Bluth

Many of us in our late 20’s to early 40’s are very familiar with the name Don Bluth.  He started his career working for the Walt Disney Studios as an animator.  He didn’t start making a name for himself until shortly after Walt Disney died in 1966.  After such a sad event for the company, Bluth was granted the opportunity to directed several animated films such as “The Rescuers” and “Pete’s Dragon”.  During the 70’s ,the quality of Disney animation was dropping and there were fears that the Disney Studios might shut down.  As a result several artist including Bluth went on and created their own company called Don Bluth Productions.  As an animation house they went on and created many of the 1980’s and early 1990’s animated classics we all still recognize such as “Secret of NIMH”, “An American Tail”, “All Dogs Go to Heaven”, "We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story", lets not forget that never ending series “Land Before Time”, and his final major project in (2000) “Titan AE”.

Bluth's Game Ventures

What a lot of people forget is that Bluth also pioneered into the world of video games for several platforms in the 1980’s.  The most memorable ones are “Dragon’s Lair” (1983), “Space Ace” (1983), “Dragon’s Lair II: Timewarp” (1991).

Through the years, these games have been release and re-release in several platforms.  In each released the gameplay was extremely frustrating as you play along a non linear storyline that had questionable reaction to the controllers.  However regardless of how frustrating this made players, these games hold a special place in our lives.  In fact its influence is so epic, that these games have come back in a modern gaming platform known as the Apple iOS systems for our iPhones and iPads.

You may ask yourself what company would be brave enough to tackle such an iconic a frustrating game? Well; none other than EA Games, w
ho else.

 Dragon’s Lair

When you first see the game on the trailer (back then or now) it looks like a movie and you wonder what the game is like. The game play features a sequence of arrows you have to hit with your controller in order to make it through the dark castle to rescue the princess. I compare it to a torture version of the Simon game with gorgeous visuals. The sad part is that at times you know you have hit your controller at the right moment but you still die over and over again.  Most of us witness more epic deaths than epic progress but luckily the animation is good and funny.  After a while, people who are dedicated to play this game develop a list of favorites death scenes.

As bad as the game play is you will be amazed that is has been released in Arcade form, Sega CD, CD-i, Game Boy Color, NES, PC, DVD, HD DVD, Blu Ray Disk, Playstation Network for PS3 and PSP, Nintendo Wii, DSWare, and iPhone and iPads.  You will also be amazed to know that there’s a second game to this series. So I guess the fans do love punishment.

The
Dragons Lair app is available at the Apple's App Store for only $0.99. Shortly after opening the app you will realized that nothing has changed. This includes the poor maneuvering, the confusing game play but with the awesome death scenes that taunt you in your tiny iPhone screen, you'll continue to play it over and over again.

 Space Ace

So imagine you just picked up not just one but maybe two next generation games including this golden oldie called Space Ace.  Both  “Dragons Lair” and “Space Ace” were released in the same year trying to market on this new technology.  Sadly, because they were both developed around the same time, the technology did not get any better. They simply carried the same problems over to another game. So yes, this game is equally frustrating but it’s also a classic.

Just like it’s predecessor the game has been release multiple times
as well. This game has been released in Arcade form, 3DO, Amiga, Apple IIGS, CD- i, Jaguar CD, PC, Atari ST, Sega CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, Wii, DSiWare, iPhone, and  PS3.  This game makes it part of the Don Bluth Trilogy games.

Unlike Dragons Lair that only cost you $1,  Space Ace will cost you a few more bucks.  At the App Store you are looking at around $4.99 for the game, but you will have the same fun frustrating time you had the first time you played it with a joystick.

If the App experience is not your cup of tea, keep in mind you can picked up all three of the games for the Wii so you can enjoy it with not just yourself but also taking turns with the family.

The weekly Raging Nerdgasm report

3D overdose, the fast track to SW VII, the Thanksgiving hangover (or as retail calls it, "black Friday")

I'm starting a new weekly collum to showcase a recap of what's going on in all things pop culture related, so let's get on with it.

OD'd on 3D

I'm not sure if I'm in the minority or majority, but I'm fatigued by the barrage of movies in 3D. Some movies it works, some it doesn't do anything. Like Avatar was amazing in 3D but it was so long I started feeling the effects taking their toll on my eyes. I got super hyped for Tron Legacy in 3D, but 4 scenes were filmed in actual 3D. At least they tell you at the beginning, but what a letdown to find out after you've buy two tickets for a midnight show and are already sitting in your seat. At that point, I became cautious about which films to see in 3D. Being selective, I went more for animated features in 3D because the clarity of the visuals and already computer rendered scenes benefited from the extra help of 3D. Legend of the Guardians: The owls of Ga'hoole was one where an already breathtaking movie was even more enjoyable in 3D. Despicable Me, Megamind and Up were also much more enjoyable in 3D that they were in 2D.

Then on the other hand you have the big budget Hollywood blockbusters where 3D does absolutely nothing for my experience. Avengers, Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spiderman, Star Wars: Episode I were semi-worthless to me in 3D. The 3D effect was shallow to say the least. Then you have movies that really don't need the 3D treatment like Dredd, Fast and the Furious, Piranha 3DD (actually, I take that back. The boobie jiggling was worth the ticket price but damn is Christopher Lloyd hideous in 3D) and the upcoming GI Joe: Retaliation. What's the point? I'm not going to pay to see these in 3D, these are movies that benefit in no way from all the time/money/effort it takes to render them in 3D. I think 3D has hit the same wall it hit back in the 60's, over saturation and shallow effects in exchange for a pricier ticket. The movie industry just needs to shift focus to going full digital projection. The new Sony 4K systems have an amazing frame-rate output that makes 3D look passe. 45-60 frames per second for a crystal clear picture that rivals home theater Blu Ray.

SW epVII gets a Disney Fast Pass?

We literally need a weatherman to come out everyday and tell us about the progress on the newest Disney venture, Star Wars: episode VII- Don't fuck it up Mickey or I'm calling Truly Nolen. It's almost been a whole month since the Mouse bought LucasFilms outright for 4.05 billion dollars, a total so staggering and a deal so sudden it sent the fattest of nerds into cardiac arrest and the rest of us contemplating the Saga's fate now that it's under new management. Everyday there's new news, new potential release dates, news on who from the original cast is down for reprising their roles (and let's face it, #1/ do any of them really have anything else better to do? #2/  see the first explanation), who's not really wanting to make an encore performance of their original role (don't you fucks pull a Bill Murray/Ghostbusters 3 on me or I'll track you down like the dogs you are and cry uncontrollably on your doorstep till you change your mind) and who might join the cast (lord be with you Disney if you mention any member of the Twilight cast or Justin Bieber because hell hath no fury like a legion of man-children scorned.). Everyday is a conflicting story and I'm not talking about internet rumblings, I'm talking about press releases directly from the Mouse House itself. Only time will tell, just hurry up the hell up Disney; Luke, Leia, Han and the rest of the group is lookin' mighty ancient.

my Thanksgiving hangover, "happy black Friday, war is over"

I didn't see any reason to leave the house the whole day. Not one thing tempted me to brave the crowds, I'm holding out for cyber Monday.
